Digital media are an important part of our culture. A multitude of basic technologies are required to bring images, sound, video or interactive 3D worlds to the viewer in high visual and acoustic quality. Visualizations make it possible to depict complex and interrelated facts using sensor data and simulations. Data and experiences can be analyzed faster with the help of visualizations. The aim is to present knowledge in an understandable way and to facilitate decisions.

The research focus of the Fraunhofer ICT Group is on 3D visualization and sound reinforcement as well as video and audio coding and transmission. The Fraunhofer ICT Group makes important contributions to developments in the fields of real-time visualization, auralization, efficient compression methods, autostereoscopic 3D displays and the integration of real and virtual worlds for immersive multimedia applications.

Fields of application

Today, the presentation of complex 3D models in real time and photorealistic image quality is an important tool in technical areas such as the automotive industry, mechanical and plant engineering, but also medicine and urban planning. In the cultural sector, too, the technologies of virtual reality are increasingly used to present art treasures in their original form and make them digitally accessible. 3D sound is used wherever improved spatial audio reproduction is required – in concert halls, at live events, in planetariums and showrooms as well as in vehicles and in the area of virtual product development.
