Access to communication networks and services, and thus the provision of sufficient bandwidth, is of crucial importance for people, companies and regions today. Whether at work or in their leisure time, people are increasingly dependent on the Internet. Today, however, telecommunications is much more than just telephony. It is no longer just about connecting people, but also about organizing communication between machines and providing data for different devices and services. This creates the basis for the Internet of Things and Services.

The Fraunhofer ICT Group develops accesses, building blocks and tools for Next Generation Networks so that technologies and applications can be efficiently implemented across departments. In addition, the researchers ensure device-independent, personalized communication that meets users' demands for availability, quality, convergence and interactivity.

The Fraunhofer ICT Group is a pioneer in the research and development of the Internet of the future (Future Internet), especially in the areas of the Network of the Future, the Internet of Services, and the Internet of Things. With its latest developments in the areas of software-defined networking and virtualization of network functions, the researchers enable – for international network operators, manufacturers and users – the efficient prototypical realization of innovative 5G infrastructures and applications, especially in the area of professional and industrial communication.

Core competencies

  • Test environments and toolkits
  • Secure and robust communication protocols
  • Software-defined networks
  • Internet of Things/M2M
  • Car-2-X communication
  • 5G transmission standards

Fields of application

The communication networks for man and machine form the basis for complex applications in areas such as transport, health and administration. The requirements are correspondingly high. Countless applications benefit from digital communication. This requires reliable and secure communication networks that can be wireless or wired, self-sufficient or connected to the Internet.
