Software-based Value Creation in Germany and Europe

»Value creation through software« is a major potential topic for the entire industry and the future of the industrial base in Germany and Europe. Fraunhofer, together with other stakeholders, can make an important contribution. While the general need for action is known, the status quo in the areas of startups, financing, culture, and industry must be examined more closely.

  • Software is labor-intensive and creates many highly qualified jobs.
  • Software revenue in the USA amounts to USD 300 billion.
  • In Germany, software revenue has doubled to EUR 36 billion in 10 years – which is little compared to the automotive market.
  • 90 out of 100 successful software companies come from the USA.

Priorities

  • Rethink business models for software in Germany
    • Increase the innovative capacity and sovereignty of the German (software) industry
    • From “software” to “ecosystems”
  • Education and societal perception
    • Sustainable education initiative for competence both broadly and at the top level
    • Explicit promotion of research and teaching in software engineering
  • Strategic plan to establish the software industry as a key sector in Germany and the EU, placing the utilization of software at the center
